2027 Honda Civic Type R Sharpens Its Edge in America as Europe Says Goodbye

Honda updates the North American Civic Type R with revised styling, chassis tuning and smarter technology for 2027, while stricter emissions regulations have ended the hot hatch’s run in Europe after 2026.

2027 Honda Civic Type R Sharpens Its Edge in America as Europe Says Goodbye

Honda gave us plenty of reasons to place the 2026 Civic Type R near the top of our sport-compact wish list, from its manual gearbox to a chassis capable of running with some of the best sports cars. Europe will lose the hot hatch after 2026 because of stricter emissions regulations, but America’s best-selling hot hatch enters 2027 with several small changes intended to improve its ownership, driving experience and everyday usability.

The first update is mainly visual rather than dynamic, although it could make the Type R even more appealing if you notice it. The 2027 hatchback features a more aggressive front fascia with a larger grille opening, plus a deeper front splitter that Honda says produces additional downforce.

The splitter may be difficult to feel from behind the wheel, but other revisions sound more meaningful. Honda has retuned the dampers in the currently very firm +R drive mode to reduce bouncing and impact harshness on rougher roads away from the track. A new yoke spring in the brake pedal also limits linkage play and is intended to sharpen pedal feel.

Honda has recalibrated the rev-matching system for quicker operation and smoother downshifts. The K20C 2.0-liter engine also gets a redesigned plastic cover styled after a vintage Type R cam cover. Power remains unchanged, with the 2027 model producing 315 hp (319 PS) and 310 lb-ft (420 Nm). That output reaches the front wheels through a limited-slip differential and a standard six-speed manual transmission.

Heated seats arrive at last

The Civic is hardly short on performance, either. Its roughly 5-second 0-to-60-mph (97 km/h) time is impressive for a front-wheel-drive car, and its 3,188-lb (1,446-kg) curb weight helps it feel considerably quicker once higher speeds reduce the traction advantage enjoyed by all-wheel-drive rivals.

Meteorite Gray Metallic joins the available colors, while three-stage heated sport seats become standard for the first time. For 2027, the suede-effect upholstery features a perforated pattern and black stripes, while the climate-control knobs are black and the shifter, door handles and console trim are finished in dark gray.

Google Built-in arrives

Ultrasuede also covers the upper door panels and the top of the instrument cluster, where Honda says it helps reduce windshield glare and reflections. Connectivity upgrades include Google Built-in and Alexa Built-in for the first time, along with two USB-C ports on the console above the wireless phone charger.

Honda has also enhanced the lane-keeping assistance system and added post-collision braking. Neither feature is likely to determine whether someone buys a Type R, but both are useful additions.

The Type R moves toward $50,000

We will need to drive a 2027 car to determine how much the modest powertrain and chassis revisions improve the Type R’s already engaging character. More horsepower would have been welcome, but the Civic does not truly need it.

More significant is the fact that American Honda continues to offer the Type R in the US, even as emissions regulations end its availability in other markets after 2026 and push the manual Civic Si off sale in North America. The 2027 car costs $49,990 including destination, up from $48,690 for the MY26 model. That price consists of $48,695 plus a $1,295 destination charge, making it more expensive than every rival except the Volkswagen Golf R. Even so, the Type R could still be considered a bargain—because short of a 911 GT3, what else offers this combination?

The 2027 Honda Civic Type R keeps its 315 hp turbocharged engine, front-wheel drive and six-speed manual transmission while gaining revised damping, smoother rev matching, updated styling, heated seats and Google Built-in. It also becomes more expensive at $49,990 including destination. The model remains available in the US despite emissions rules ending sales in other markets after 2026.
