Volkswagen has long catered to camping enthusiasts with its California range. For 2027, the German automaker is focusing on the flagship Grand California, adding solar panels, new interior trim and a fresh special edition while cutting prices across the range.
Introduced in 2019, the Grand California received a facelift for 2025 that brought a new digital cockpit, a camper control panel and more advanced ADAS. The large motorhome now receives further upgrades while becoming more affordable.
The headline addition is the Dune Special Edition, which gives the campervan a more adventurous appearance. It combines Ascot Grey paint with an unpainted front bumper, complemented by plastic cladding along the sides and on the rear bumper. Dune graphics and 17-inch black Lismore alloy wheels complete the look.

Although its styling is utilitarian, the van comes with LED headlights and daytime running lights as standard. Fog lights and side marker lamps remain optional. The cabin features Climatronic air conditioning, ambient lighting, a digital instrument cluster and a 10.4-inch infotainment screen, with a 12.9-inch display available as an option.
For 2027, Volkswagen adds Atami Bamboo trim to the cabin alongside a matching hard-wearing wood-effect floor covering. Extra storage compartments and a foldout table also improve the campervan’s practicality.
The optional Off-Grid Package adds solar panels and two 40Ah LiFePO4 batteries. Their capacity is 40 percent greater, allowing occupants to remain off the grid for longer.

The Grand California continues to be offered in two body styles. The taller 600 is 5.98 m (235.4 in) long, while the extended 680 measures 6.80 m (267.7 in). Both provide a fully equipped kitchen, sleeping, living and dining areas, plus a compact bathroom with a shower. That bathroom distinguishes the Crafter-based motorhome from the smaller California models based on the Caddy, Transporter, Multivan and ID.Buzz.
Power comes exclusively from a 2.0-liter turbodiesel producing 161 hp (120 kW / 163 PS) and 410 Nm (302 lb-ft) of torque. The engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, driving either the front wheels or all four wheels when specified with the 4Motion system.
