BMW’s 7 Series Protection and X5 Protection VR6 are engineered to shield occupants from severe threats, including grenade blasts. For high-profile customers who primarily face the risk of gunfire, however, that level of armor may be unnecessary. BMW’s new Concept 7 Protection is intended as a more focused alternative.

The Concept 7 Protection is deliberately difficult to distinguish from a standard 7 Series, offering a more discreet appearance than BMW’s heavily armored models. That understated design is intended to appeal to private and corporate customers. BMW also says the concept preserves the handling characteristics of a regular 7 Series.

Built to the new BayB standard, the Concept 7 Protection is intended to defend against commonly used handgun rounds, including .44 Magnum and 9 mm ammunition. It does not offer the protection against high-powered blasts or semi-automatic weapons provided by the more heavily armored 7 Series Protection, but it still receives substantial structural upgrades.

The sedan features bulletproof glass and doors constructed from ballistic steel and fiber-reinforced composites. Those materials are also installed beneath the panoramic glass sunroof. Although the panel appears ordinary from outside, its sunblind remains permanently closed from inside the car. The bulkhead provides additional ballistic protection.

This show car is fitted with an intercom and an attack alarm system while retaining the standard 7 Series’ luxury appointments. Its cabin uses BMW Individual Smoke White Merino leather, an BMW M Anthracite Alcantara headliner, and additional Alcantara trim. Electronically operated sunblinds and a digital rear-view mirror are also included. A fold-down rear console with a table and cool box debuts on the concept and is scheduled to join the full 7 Series range in the second half of 2027.

The Concept 7 Protection is based on the M760e xDrive and uses a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six paired with an electric motor. Combined output stands at 603 horsepower and 800 Nm (590 lb-ft) of torque. BMW calls the car an “insight into the potential expansion of the BMW Protection portfolio for additional user profiles,” suggesting that a production version could follow soon.
