Honda Prelude 2027 Limited Edition Heads to Europe, Not the US

Some of the most desirable versions of Japanese cars never make it beyond their home market. Think of models such as the Subaru Impreza Spec C and Honda NSX Type R. However, a limited-edition Honda Prelude coupe that initially appeared destined to remain JDM-only is now heading overseas.

Honda unveiled the Prelude 2027 Limited Edition in Japan in June and has now confirmed a European version of the package. Its defining feature is Premium Crystal Garnet Metallic paint, which Honda says is intended to reflect light and emphasize the coupe’s contours more effectively than existing choices such as white.

It may achieve that goal, although the color would not be my first choice. It has a somewhat mature feel, which could be a smart decision given that many Prelude buyers owned the original model three decades ago. The package also includes red accents on the front and rear bumpers, bright red Brembo brake calipers and 19-inch black-cut alloy wheels. The changes continue inside.

The cabin features Bordeaux red materials across the dashboard, seats, door cards and center console. Contrast stitching is used throughout, while the dashboard carries an embroidered Prelude logo and the floor mats receive additional red accents.

The hybrid powertrain between the shock towers is neither upgraded nor given matching exterior treatment. As a result, the Limited Edition uses the same 2.0-liter four-cylinder combustion engine and pair of electric motors found in every other Prelude.

In Europe, that combination produces 181 hp (184 PS), significantly less than the 200 hp (203 PS) quoted for Japan and the US. Power reaches the front wheels through Honda’s S+ Shift system, which simulates the feel of traditional gears and allows drivers to shift using paddles mounted behind the leather-wrapped steering wheel. A Prelude Type R remains absent, assuming the model is not eventually discontinued. The coupe does, however, borrow hardware from the Civic Type R, including dual-axis front suspension, adaptive dampers and Brembo front brakes.

The Anti-Civic Type R

The Prelude’s lack of genuine Type R status does not appear to be hurting demand. It may actually be a smart approach, appealing to older buyers who want an engaging car but are put off by the Civic’s aggressive wings and manual transmission.

Even with limited US availability, the Prelude attracted 2,077 new American owners from January through July this year. That exceeded the Subaru BRZ’s 1,785 sales, although Mazda’s MX-5 remained ahead of both with 5,984. Demand for hybrid vehicles among buyers affected by higher fuel prices has likely contributed to the Prelude’s performance.

However, the Prelude will have to continue its US sales momentum without the 2027 Limited Edition. An American Honda spokesperson told us that product plans and special editions can differ by region, adding that Honda has “no plans to offer this specific color in the US market at this time.”

Honda’s Prelude 2027 Limited Edition will reach Europe with exclusive Premium Crystal Garnet Metallic paint, Bordeaux interior trim, red exterior details and 19-inch wheels. Its 181-hp hybrid powertrain remains unchanged from the regular European model, while adaptive dampers, Brembo brakes and Civic Type R-inspired suspension add sporting hardware. Despite 2,077 US sales through July, Honda says the edition is not planned for America.
