UK Police Can Now Seize Vehicles Used for Illegal Off-Roading Without Warning

Having your vehicle seized by police is enough to spoil any day, but the situation becomes considerably worse when it happens miles from civilization. The immediate question then is how you are going to get home. That is the question UK police are now posing to people who take vehicles off-road illegally.

Authorities in North Wales say unauthorized off-roading and other forms of “anti-social” vehicle use are causing increasing harm to protected countryside. Following a change in UK law over the summer, officers can seize offending vehicles immediately instead of giving their owners a prior warning. “It’s a long walk home,” PC Eryl Lloyd of North Wales Police’s rural crime team told the BBC. Officers already have a strong example of why the new power matters.

Last year, seven 4x4s traveled in convoy from Liverpool to Wales’ Berwyn Site of Special Scientific Interest. Natural Resources Wales said the group used bolt cutters to break a gate lock, removed signs banning private vehicles and drove more than 3 km (1.9 miles) over privately owned land toward Moel Fferna. The group also recorded part of the trip and posted it on TikTok.

Authorities said the videos showed the vehicles driving through protected peat and blanket bog habitat, leaving deep tracks in the ground. Two of the 4x4s became stuck and had to be recovered by other convoy members, adding to the damage. NRW eventually identified the vehicles through their registered keepers, while the social media posts helped connect the defendants and their vehicles to the site.

Three men were eventually convicted. John Robinson and Michael Williams were each ordered to pay approximately £2,000 ($2,700 at current exchange rates) and were banned from driving for two months. Joseph Hodgson was later fined more than £2,000 and given a three-year Criminal Behaviour Order preventing him from entering the entire 254-square-kilometer (98-square-mile) Berwyn protected area.

North Wales Police and NRW say reports of illegal off-roading have continued to rise despite last year’s convictions. Lloyd said the problem involves not only 4x4s and motorcycles but also e-bikes. The latest deterrent is straightforward: ignore the signs and damage the countryside, and the vehicle that brought you there may not be available to take you home.

North Wales authorities say illegal off-roading is damaging protected landscapes, with 4x4s, motorcycles and e-bikes all contributing to the problem. A convoy that damaged the Berwyn protected area helped highlight the issue after participants posted evidence on TikTok. Under a summer law change, police can now seize offending vehicles without first issuing a warning, potentially leaving drivers to make their own way home.
